"Incoherent public policy is nothing new in Washington, of course."

Love song to a stranger

Love song to a stranger - Joan Baez

Don't tell me of love everlasting and other sad dreams
I don't want to hear
Just tell me of passionate strangers who rescue each other
From a lifetime of cares
Because if love means forever, expecting nothing returned
Then I hope I'll be given another whole lifetime to learn

Because you gave to me oh so many things it makes me wonder
How they could belong to me
And I gave you only my dark eyes that melted your soul down
To a place where it longs to be

"When you are seventy, you don't need replies"

Το δεύτερο: Could Froyd's oedipal complex be dismissed as a "Jewish error"? Παραθέτω εδώ ένα πολύ σύντομο απόσπασμα: "For every Jewish family left on earth, there are thousands of Muslim families. Analysis knows nothing about these families and these patients. Knows nothing about the different and overweening role of the father, about the deep unconscious desire for the father, for a return to the comfort and safety of the father, for merger with the father."

How cultural anger can be marshalled to achieve economic ends...

Ο τίτλος προέρχεται από το βιβλίο "What's the matter with Kansas? (How conservatives won the heart of America)" του Thomas Frank.

The Great Backlash
"In fact, backlash leaders systematically downplay the politics of economics. The movement's basic premise is that culture outweighs economics as a matter of public concern- that Values matter most, as one backlash title has it. On those grounds, it rallies citizens who would once have been reliable partisans of the New Deal to the standard of conservatism. Old-fashioned values may count when conservatives appear on the stump, but once conservatives are in office the only old-fashioned situation they care about is an economic regimenof low wages and lax regulations. Over the last three decades they have smashed the welfare state, reduced the tax burden on corporations and the wealthy, and generally facilitated the country;s return to a nineteenth-century pattern of wealth distribution. Thus the primary contradiction of the backlash: it is a working-class movement that has done incalculable, historic harm to working-class people.
The leaders of the backlash may talk Christ, but they walk corporate. Values may "matter most" to voters, but they always take a backseat to the needs of money once the elections are won. This is a basic earmark of the phenomenon, absolutely consistent across its decades-long history. Abortion is never halted. Affirmative action is never abolished. The culture industry is never forced to clean up its act..."

The two nations
"In the backlash imagination, America is always in a state of quasi-civil war: on one side are the unpretentious millions os Authentic Americans; on the other stand the booklish, all-powerful liberals who run the country but are contemptuous of the tastes and beliefs of the people who inhabit it. ...
The current installment of this fantasy is the story of the 'two Americas", the symbolic division of the country that, after the presidential election of 2000, captivated not only backlashers but a seizable class of the pundit class. The idea found its inspiration in the map of the electoral results that year: there were those vast stretches of inland "red" space (the networks all used red to designate Republican victories) where people voted for George W. Bush and those tiny little "blue" coastal areas where people lived in big cities and voted for Al Gore. "

"Psychological disorder
Gödel was shy, withdrawn and eccentric. He would wear warm, winter clothing in the middle of summer. In the middle of winter, he would leave all of the windows open in his home because he believed that conspirators were trying to assassinate him with poison gas. He was a somewhat sickly man and was prescribed specific diets and medical regimens by doctors, but Gödel often ignored their advice, or even would do the opposite of what his prescription indicated. This caused him to suffer further illness. In the 1940s he suffered from a bleeding ulcer, but his distrust of doctors led him to delay treatment; he risked death and was saved only by emergency blood transfusion.
Amongst his delusions was the belief that unknown villains were trying to kill him by poisoning his food. For this reason, Gödel would only eat his wife's cooking, refusing to even eat his own cooking for fear of being poisoned.
Death
Late in 1977, Adele became incapacitated due to illness and so could no longer cook for Gödel. Due to his paranoia, he refused to eat any food at all and thus died of "malnutrition and inanition caused by personality disturbance" in Princeton Hospital on January 14, 1978. He weighed 65 pounds."
